Book Folding – Creativity In and Out of the Classroom

by Terri Dennehy, D.Ed, OTR/L

On Tuesday, October 10, 2017, several freshman students in the OT 111 Media Class did their first college presentation at a Book Folding Event, hosted by Librarian Joshua Cohen.  This evening event was a collaborative effort between occupational therapy and the library and was open to the college campus at large. Twenty-six students and faculty from various areas and majors attended the crafting experience which was taught by OT students.

In OT 111, the cohort’s 72 freshman are learning about the domain and process of occupational therapy and the ways we think through every day tasks using activity analysis.  Book folding is one of several paper crafts which Terri uses to increase students’ awareness of current, recyclable, re-purposed activities that can have profound therapeutic effects for therapy clients. Many thanks to Joshua for displaying the folded book art in the library and for offering an opportunity to share one aspect of what we do in OT with the college community.
