{"id":955,"date":"2015-09-08T15:00:10","date_gmt":"2015-09-08T19:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/ot\/?p=955"},"modified":"2015-10-20T21:46:04","modified_gmt":"2015-10-21T01:46:04","slug":"occupational-therapys-role-in-suicide-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/ot\/2015\/09\/08\/occupational-therapys-role-in-suicide-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Occupational Therapy Have a Role in Suicide Prevention?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>September is Suicide Prevention awareness month. \u00a0Of course, this is important every day. \u00a0The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) has various <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">suicide prevention<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0information and resources available for consumers and for professionals. \u00a0Did you know that SAMSHA has identified<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org\/learn\/riskfactors.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"> risk and protective factors<\/a><\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/ot\/files\/2015\/09\/Suicide-prevention-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-956 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/ot\/files\/2015\/09\/Suicide-prevention-logo.jpg\" alt=\"Suicide prevention logo with crisis telephone number\" width=\"283\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/ot\/files\/2015\/09\/Suicide-prevention-logo.jpg 300w, https:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/ot\/files\/2015\/09\/Suicide-prevention-logo-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/a><strong>Risk factors<\/strong>* include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list\">\n<li>Mental disorders, particularly mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders and certain personality disorders<\/li>\n<li>Alcohol and other substance use disorders<\/li>\n<li>Impulsive and\/or aggressive tendencies<\/li>\n<li>History of trauma or abuse<\/li>\n<li>Major physical illnesses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of those risk factors above represent clients whom OTs may serve &#8211; in various practice settings, many of which are not considered mental health settings. Next, look at the <strong>protective factors<\/strong>* below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Effective clinical care for mental, physical and substance use disorders<\/li>\n<li>Strong connections to family and community support\n<ul>\n<li>family may include a sense of duty to care for others or to care for pets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Support through ongoing medical and mental health care relationships<\/li>\n<li>Skills in problem solving, conflict resolution and handling problems in a non-violent way<\/li>\n<li>Cultural and religious beliefs that discourage suicide and support self-preservation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Did you notice anything? Yes, many of the protective factors revolve around meaningful occupational activities and roles, e.g. family &amp; social support, spiritual or faith-based values, caring relationships, and problem-solving or coping skills. \u00a0OT can address these skills, roles, and factors\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>in any setting<\/em><\/span>. \u00a0How do you address psychosocial health, coping, and engagement in meaningful occupations for your clients?<\/p>\n<p>*Risk and protective factors are selected from the entire list at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org<\/a><\/strong>.
