Do you have an appreciation for poetry, and prose? Or maybe you like historical pieces?\u00a0 All English majors sample one course that satisfies these cravings.<\/p>\n<p>Major British Writers exposes students to several different literary eras. The course teaching critical reading skills valuable to all students.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Digging into Beloved Literature <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Major British Writers is taught by two different faculty members, depending on the semester.\u00a0 Kimberly Adams and Suzanne Webster rotate through this course, which fulfills a requirement for all three English department concentrations.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, the course has covered the poetry of William Wordsworth, Elizabeth<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_74\" style=\"width: 391px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74\" class=\" wp-image-74\" src=\"http:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/english\/files\/2018\/02\/wordsworth-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"daffodils with poem\" width=\"381\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/english\/files\/2018\/02\/wordsworth-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/english\/files\/2018\/02\/wordsworth.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-74\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Retrieved from http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/mvnfasu<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Barrett Browning, Wilfred Owen, and Seamus Heaney, to offer just a sampling of the \u201cMajor British Writers\u201d that might be included.<\/p>\n<p>British Literature can seem daunting to students, but not to James Moyer, an English literature major at Elizabethtown College. He is currently enrolled in the class and has nothing but positive words for anyone interested in enrolling as well.<\/p>\n<p>Moyer explains that the major objective is to instill an understanding of the nine authors assigned for the semester by studying \u201cmany elements of the pieces and of their authors\u2019 lives.\u201d The class includes discussion and close reading.<\/p>\n<p>When reading a poem, the class takes a look at its structure (including versification) and its content, as well as \u201cthe biographical and historical contexts \u2018setting the scene\u2019 around the works\u2019 compositions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moyer said he can \u201cappreciate any piece with which we [the class] work.\u201d He specifically mentions enjoying William Wordsworth\u2019s \u201cLines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moyer says he would recommend this course to other students \u201cbecause it provides such an exhaustive view of the authors\u2019 lives, works, and periods, and because, if nothing else, the discussions are immersive and engaging.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Author Bio:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Megan Finnegan will graduate with a degree in English, professional writing in 2017.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you enjoy reading works from well-known British authors?
