The Bowers Writers House serves as an extension to Elizabethtown\u2019s academic curriculum, and offers students with the opportunity to meet professionals in all fields of study.<\/p>\n<p>It is the sole mission of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etown.edu\/centers\/writershouse\/about.aspx\">Bowers Writers House<\/a> \u201cto provide an interdisciplinary space for presentation, performance, expression and study,\u201d said Jesse Waters, the director of the organization. Over the past six and a half years, they have succeeded in reaching this goal, having hosted over 280 events featuring professionals in various fields of research.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Embrace Interdisciplinary Knowledge<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/english\/files\/2017\/04\/Bowers-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Bowers Talk\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/english\/files\/2017\/04\/Bowers-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/english\/files\/2017\/04\/Bowers-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/english\/files\/2017\/04\/Bowers-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/groups.etown.edu\/english\/files\/2017\/04\/Bowers.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Students who enjoy TED Talks for their diverse topics and intriguing information may find that the Writer\u2019s House is just what they need\u2014right in their back yard.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-law major Tiana Ferrante said \u201c[Etown students] benefit by meeting speakers who normally wouldn\u2019t be accessible to college students. For instance, I discussed poetry with Richard Blanco, a poet who performed at President Obama\u2019s second inauguration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In terms of offering unique and diverse information to students, this organization really does the job. In fact, Bowers has hosted an event for every department on the Elizabethtown campus. They have also worked with many campus organizations to create co-programs to encompass an even larger span of topics.<\/p>\n<p>English classes occasionally meet at the Bowers House location, and English students <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etown.edu\/depts\/english\/english-major.aspx\">from all concentrations <\/a>have benefited from hearing about the lives of working writers.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in just one month at the Bowers Writers House, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etown.edu\/centers\/writershouse\/events.aspx\">topics of presentation<\/a> have ranged from a discussion on diversity and culture, to Shakespeare, to the technical process of publishing a book.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Find a New Passion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Professor Waters mentioned that speakers are encouraged to \u201cbring their passion\u201d to their presentation. By speaking about what they individually have a passion for, these guest speakers have the ability to \u201cempower students to find something wonderful about the world of which they may not have been aware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students from every academic discipline are encouraged to attend a Bowers Writers House event. Over the years, students from all backgrounds and majors have found new interests to pursue during their time at Elizabethtown College\u2014that\u2019s what Professor Waters considers \u201cthe true liberal arts experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Enjoy a Unique Experience <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ferrante said \u201cEvery time I\u2019ve been to the Bowers Writers House, I\u2019ve met someone new. The fact that the events are open to the entire community makes it more likely that students and local people will have the opportunity for interaction and conversation, both of which strengthen any community dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the plethora of knowledge to be gained from published writers, Professor Waters encourages students to attend events at Bowers for several added features. Students who visit Bowers events may enter drawings for free books or enjoy delicious snacks after the presentations.
