Fieldwork Myths: #1 – Level I Fieldwork is observation only

Person using a walker and doing therapyLevel I fieldwork is addressed in several of the 19 accreditation standards including standard C.1.8 which dictates level I be observation AND participation. For sites challenged to provide participation, that can happen by having students write practice notes (even if they are later shredded), verbally including them in the treatment planning portion of assessments, feeling increased or decreased muscle tone during sessions, and a number of other ways.

My clinical background spans outpatient and inpatient physical rehab, mental health and pediatrics. I practiced for 14 years before making the switch to academic fieldwork coordinator in 2001. I maintain a small private practice, serving children and adults in home and community settings for physical, cognitive, sensory and emotional barriers to participation. I am currently learning about neurofeedback and its role in OT. I am an Etown resident and enjoying small town life!
