Elizabethtown College Professor of Spanish Charla Lorenzen led two groups of students that presented at recent teaching conferences.

Temple CAT Annual Faculty Conference
In January, Lorenzen was joined by early childhood education major and Spanish minor Laura Carr ’22, as well as Spanish education majors Emily Smith ’23, Makayla Myers ’22, and Brooke Bergman ’22 to present at Temple University’s Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) 19th Annual Faculty Conference on Teaching Excellence.

The students had recently taught in the College’s Children’s Spanish Program (CSP).

Their presentation, “Harnessing Hope to Improve an Intergenerational Community-based Service-Learning Project,” detailed how the Covid-19 pandemic positively influenced their efforts to redesign the CSP curriculum, making it more adaptive, accessible, inclusive, and equitable.

Lancaster Learns 2021 Conference
Bergman, Myers, and Smith also presented with Lorenzen at the Lancaster Learns 2021 Conference in February. Their presentation, “Applying Lessons Learned from a Pandemic to Improve an Intergenerational Community-based Service-Learning Project,” detailed how the Covid-19 pandemic led them to engage in generative action that changed not only the way they plan the CSP units and lessons, but also the curriculum itself to be more adaptive, accessible, inclusive, and equitable.
