Two Elizabethtown College students recently completed the Ulman Foundation 4K For Cancer, a 4,000-mile relay to offer hope, inspiration, and support to cancer communities throughout the United States.
Senior Bree Komiske ’21 and junior Cassidy Dunn ’22 had been looking forward to what was originally supposed to be a cross-country relay race. They prepared themselves to travel the country, running dozens of miles each day with their teammates for the two-month run. However, with the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic the run was converted to a virtual competition and wrapped up on August 8.
What was to be a journey from Baltimore, Md. to San Francisco, Ca. became jogs through backroads and trails in their hometowns. The two friends would regularly call one another during their runs to stay in touch and encourage one another. From May 31 through August 8, the pair each logged over 300 miles. When combined with their teammates, the group completed the 4,000-mile total goal.
More importantly, Dunn and Komiske raised nearly $15,000 together for cancer research. To mark a special end to the race they finished their miles in tandem. Bree drove from her hometown in Maryland to meet up with Cassidy near her hometown of Exton, Pa. to complete their journey as it had been intended, together. The two ran from Valley Forge, Pa. to finish in on the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum, a distance of over 20 miles.
