‘Womenfolk’ celebrates the worldwide sisterhood of women
Experience the “sisterhood of women, their virtues and gifts, and often unheard voices” as photographed by Gene Ann Behrens during her international travels over the years. Currently a Professor of Music and the Director of Music Therapy at the college, photography has been a passion of hers for years and one that she loves sharing with her community. Open to all, this free exhibit will be held in the Hess Gallery, located in Zug Memorial Hall on the college’s campus. The exhibit is open now through Dec. 13 from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Behrens refers to her camera as her travel companion and a way to capture the essence of her adventures in other countries. Often these adventures bring her in contact with women — especially when she travels in more patriarchal cultures. These women sometimes provided comfort, friendship, and support to Behrens during her travels. In some cases, the women approached her to have their picture taken; and in other situations the women were a part of a scene she shot to capture a story.
Though I connect with many people during my travel, it is the women I meet who often touch my life in profound ways. They not only share intangible gifts but also insights into the impact they have in their extended families and communities.
Behrens describes the style of this show as more photojournalistic as she was trying to tell stories about the profound impact women have on their communities. To make the show accessible, Behrens created a children’s guide to viewing the photographs.This is not her debut into the art world, as her photography has been featured previously in three exhibits in Lancaster County, PA.
