Elizabethtown College senior communications major Anthony Carter has been interested in sports since he was a child and watched ESPN non-stop. Now, he has a sports internship with WGAL-TV this semester.
“Last semester, I took my senior seminar course and one of the assignments was to create a resume and cover letter for a job opportunity,” Carter said. “I already knew about WGAL-TV because I went on tours there with my professor who used to work there. I knew that I wanted to intern this semester, so I applied by emailing one of the producers at the station.”
On campus, Carter is a sprinter on the men’s track and field team, a Community Fellow for the Hackman Apartments, advertising manager for the Etownian and a social media coordinator for the Center for Student Success.
“I knew I wanted to enter [sports journalism] because sports are something that I love to watch and talk about,” Carter said.
In his junior year of high school, he started an online radio show about music and sports. One show, Zach Berman, a writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer who reported on the Philadelphia Eagles, joined Carter through a connection from a friend, which kick-started his interest in sports journalism.
“After that show, I emailed and interviewed several reporters from different NFL teams like the Detroit Lions, New York Jets, New York Giants and Denver Broncos,” Carter said. “I even emailed and interviewed ESPN’s [sports reporter] Adam Schefter.”
Once he heard back from the reporters showing their interest, he planned times for phone interviews, which he did live on his radio website.
Also after that show, Carter became a credentialed media member and covered the Jets, WNBA games, the NBA draft and arena football team the Philadelphia Soul, which he still covers for his website.
Carter credits his success at his internship to the Broadcast Journalism class he took last semester, where he learned tools such as interviewing techniques, how to film certain shots and how to create a script.
“In Broadcast Journalism, I learned everything that I am being exposed to right now at WGAL-TV,” Carter said.
At his internship, Carter has shot and edited basketball playoff games for their sports segments at 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
“So far, I’ve learned how to edit on a tight deadline as well as how to write the script into their system (teleprompter),” Carter said.
“My plan after graduation is to become a sports reporter or work my way into that field. I was offered a job at WGAL-TV to become an editor, so I may work in that role first and learn more on how to gather news quickly as well as how to speak on camera,” Carter said.
