Recently, three Elizabethtown College students were awarded as recipients of the 2019 Gilman Scholarship. Juniors Delaney Dammyer, Andrea Grey and Cierra Stevens were selected among 800 other students in the competitive scholarship program which receives an annual amount of nearly 3,400 applications.
The Gilman Scholarship was created to provide opportunities for students with financial constraints to gain proficiency in diverse languages and cultures, skills that are critically important to their academic and career development. The scholarship—which ranges from $100 to $500—will help the students with expenses as they embark on upcoming educational abroad experiences.
“This is my first time traveling out of the country, and I am really looking forward to meeting people and experiencing a new culture,” Stevens said.
All the students will travel abroad during the 2019 spring semester. They will be studying in the following countries:
- Delaney Dammyer: Iceland
- Andrea Grey: Greece
- Cierra Stevens: New Zealand
“I hope to gain confidence in myself in how I interact with others, whether that be stepping out of my comfort zone to get to know others I have never met, expanding my global cultural knowledge, or gaining insight to people with different views and values than my own,” said Grey. “I also hope to gain more independence academically, socially and physically.”
Grey’s fellow peer, Dammyer, also hopes to strengthen her soft skills sharing she hopes to, “build more self-sufficiency and exploration skills and learn to enjoy the moment.”
This is the second time Elizabethtown College students have been awarded the Gilman Scholarship and the first time three students were honored. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be of limited financial means to study or intern abroad.
About the Gilman Scholarship
The Gilman International Scholarship Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and is supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The Gilman Scholarship Program offers grants of up to $5,000 to U.S. undergraduate students of high financial need participating in credit-bearing study abroad programs or international internships. Students studying a critical need language could be eligible to receive a grant of up to $8,000. The Gilman Program allows more American undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds to study and intern abroad in more diverse locations, thereby increasing their global career readiness and contributing to our national security and economic prosperity.
