Who better to hear from about career options than those in the field? With this in mind, students and faculty members will come together at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, for the Elizabethtown College Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Professional Development Workshop.
Networking with scientists, representatives from the computer technology sector, engineers and mathematicians will be a large part of the evening. All students and faculty members in the STEM majors at the College have been invited.

Keynote speaker for the event, taking place in the College’s Gibble Auditorium, is David Skelton, vice president and general manager of development with Phoenix Contact USA, a global market leader and innovator in the field of electrical engineering and automation.
After the keynote, attendees will have the opportunity to explore more closely the various organizations and career paths that are available in the STEM fields as they network with alumni and employers.
Sharing stories from the science field are Rosemarie Garr ’07, lab supervisor at MTI-GlobalStem; Tim Houser ’04, senior research scientist at cyberDERM Inc.; Chris Nelson ’13 with Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories; and Geoffrey Quinque ’11 with GlaxoSmithKline.
Those in technology and engineering occupations—Alice Conner-Malyszek, director of manufacturing with BAE Systems; Daniel Fenton ’11 and Justin Shade ’06, product marketing specialists with Phoenix Contact; Steve Iwanowski ’01 of NextStep Technology Advisors; Tom Yeager ’06, the Mid-Atlantic Sales manager with Phoenix Contact; and Mark Yingling ’96, representing The Hershey Co.
And, giving insight about careers in Math are Keith A. Bailey, director of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry; Rick Gordon ’98, consulting actuary at Milliman Inc.; Melissa Greiner ’92, acting director at Pennsylvania Insurance Department; Wesley Morgan ’08, reporting analyst, with Phillips Pet Food and Supply; and Chester Szczepanski, senior vice president and chief actuary at Donegal Mutual Insurance Co.
“Networking with professionals is important for our students to practice and learn; some data suggests that upwards of two-thirds of all jobs and internships are not posted, but filled through networking,” said Tina MacKenzie, assistant director of internships and employer engagement at Elizabethtown College “We are grateful to the alumni and employers for participating in our STEM event.”
A similar event was held two years ago at Elizabethtown with excellent attendance from STEM students, said MacKenzie. The keynote speaker at that event was Jack Nehlig, president of Phoenix Contact USA.
