President's Higher Education Community Service Honor RollThe Corporation for National and Community Service announced Monday that Elizabethtown College has earned a place on the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. This designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

“Elizabethtown College’s motto of ‘Educate for Service’ means that service-learning is part of our culture. Our students learn how to be active citizens and leaders in their communities.” said College President Carl J. Strikwerda. “Our students really won this award themselves by their hard work. The College is honored to accept it on their behalf and that of the hundreds of agencies they help every year.”

Our students really won this award themselves by their hard work.”

To earn the honor, E-town College students engage in mentoring; community outreach; youth, family and disability services; tutoring; animal rescue initiatives; disability services; mental health support; disaster relief efforts; and health services. In all, students devote approximately 190,000 to community service each year.

To receive the Distinction, the College must display strong levels of institutional commitment, provide a compelling case for partnerships that produce measurable impact in the community and have a Federal Work-Study community service percentage of 15 percent or above.

Elizabethtown has been named to the Presidents Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll since the program began in 2006. This year, the award reflects unique recognition by also earning Distinction – the College’s second year in a row. Only 11 other Pennsylvania institutions of higher education were named to the 2014 Honor Roll with Distinction.
