Dr. Colin Helb, assistant professor of communications, was elected to a two-year term as the president of the Mid-Atlantic Popular & American Culture Association (MAPACA). His term begins Jan. 1, 2015.
Dr. Tamara L. Gillis, professor of communications, was honored with the Ernest R. McDowell Award for Excellence in Public Relations on Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Susquehanna Club in New Cumberland. The Ernest R. McDowell Award is presented annually by the Pennsylvania Public Relations Society at its Evening of Honors. Gillis is recognized, globally, for her work in education, training, change management and employee communication.
Dr. Michael G. Long, religious studies and peace and conflict studies, has published “Gay Is Good: The Life and Letters of Gay Rights Pioneer Franklin Kameny.” You can see a trailer for the book here. An early review in Publishers Weekly called Long’s new book a “must read” for anyone interested in LGBT issues.
He also gave a lecture on Franklin Kameny at the Library of Congress (LOC). Kameny’s papers, which Long used for his new book, are deposited at the LOC. Long also lectured on Jackie Robinson at George Washington University and is now penning a new manuscript with Robinson scholar Chris Lamb.
Long published two popular Huffington Post opinion pieces on Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Long’s blog posts precede the March publication of his new book: Peaceful Neighbor: Discovering the Countercultural Mister Rogers.
He also published his first children’s book: Bayard Rustin: The Invisible Activist (Quaker Books of FGC Press). Coauthored with children’s book author Jacqueline Houtman and Rustin’s longtime companion Walter Naegle, the illustrated biography is designed for ages 10 and up. Marian Wright Edelman of the Children’s Defense Fund and award-winning poet Nikki Giovanni are among those who have written endorsements for the book.

Dr. Fletcher McClellan, Dean of Faculty, presented the paper, “Signature Learning Experiences at Elizabethtown College: Increasing Student Access to High-Impact Practices,” at the November 2014 meeting of the World Congress on Education in London, England.
Dr. Carl J. Strikwerda, College president, presented the paper, “The First World War in the History of Globalization,” at a conference titled “The Legacy of World War I” Nov. 14, 2014, at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.
