Badgerow, Spence perform

Dr. Justin Badgerow, assistant professor of music, was featured guest soloist in two performances with the Kennett Symphony of Chester County. He performed the “Allegro Giocoso” movement of Edward MacDowell’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The concerts were held in early March at Lincoln University and West Chester University. The orchestra was under the direction of Dr. Robert Spence, Elizabethtown College associate professor of music.

 

Dr. E. Douglas Bomberger, professor of music and department chair, served as local arrangements chair for the 40th annual conference of the Society for American Music, held March 5 through 9 in Lancaster, Pa. The conference attracted a record attendance for the organization, which is the leading scholarly society devoted to American music.

Other Elizabethtown College faculty members who participated are Dr. James Haines, professor of music, who served on the local arrangements committee, and David Cullen, artist-in-residence, who provided entertainment for the Saturday evening banquet. Performing the music of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich at her honorary induction ceremony were Dr. Justin Badgerow, assistant professor of music; Sara Male, adjunct faculty member; Stephanie McCullough; and Debra Ronning, lecturer in music and director of keyboard studies. The College served as host institution and was represented at the opening reception by Dr. Fletcher McClellan, Dean of Faculty.


Michael Swanson
, director of theatre and dance and associate professor of theatre, earned a Kennedy Center’s American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Certificate of Merit for his direction of a new 10-minute play, titled “Looks Like Rain,” which was written by Laci Corridor for the KCACTF’s National Playwriting Program.

Collaborations & Group or Department News

Elizabethtown College Theatre participants received Kennedy Center’s American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) recognition for the production “These Shining Lives.” Senior theatre minor Katie Owens and junior theatre major Wendy Moulton were nominated for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship. Senior theatre major Mike Wawrzynek received the alternate nomination. Richard Wolf-Spencer, assistant professor of theatre, earned a Certificate of Merit for his scenic design, while guest artist Teresa Wolf-Spencer received the same recognition for the production’s costume design.

Justin Greiss, political science, was recognized with a trip to FreedomFest held in Las Vegas, Nev., for his work with the group Students for Liberty and the campus group Young Americans for Liberty. Greiss will attend the world’s largest gathering of free minds from July 9 through 12.

Erin Krause ’16, legal studies, was awarded the James A. Finnegan Fellowship at the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence Friday, March 21, 2014. Fellows are selected based on academic achievement and their response to a research essay on a policy topic. In addition to a luncheon at the Governor’s Residence, Fellows receive a minimum cash prize of $1,000 and a paid summer internship in the executive branch of state government. Elizabethtown College has produced more James A. Finnegan Fellows than any other institution.

 

Staff

Members of the Marketing and Communications team co-presented at an industry conference. Wendy Sheaffer, creative director; Donna Talarico-Beerman, director of integrated communications; and Danilo Yabut, director of web and new media strategy co-presented “We’re Not Just Order Takers: Working with an In-House Creative Team” at the CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) District II Conference on February 9.

 

Donna Talarico-Beerman was part of the opening panel, “Telling Your Story: Good Writing is Still Good Writing in any Medium” at the 2014 CUPRAP Conference, an annual meeting of the Association for Communicators in Education on March 11. Also, on March 9, she presented “InteGREAT! How to Combine Print, Web and Social to Build Relationships and Increase Yield” at the 2014 OU Campus user conference. OU Campus is the College’s web content management system. Also at the conference she was presented with the 2014 Customer of the Year Award.
