Dr. E. Fletcher McClellan, political science, and Brianna Maurer ’14, presented a paper, “After Wahlke: New Models for Organizing the Undergraduate Political Science Major and the Prospects for Reform,” at the 2014 American Political Science Association Teaching and Learning Conference, Feb. 7 through 9, in Philadelphia.
In addition, McClellan published a book review in the November 2013 issue of the Journal of Political Science Education “Teaching Civic Engagement: From Student to Active Citizen” by Alison McCartney, et.al.
Dr. Michael Silberstein’s paper “Constraints on Localization and Decomposition in the Biological Sciences” was published in the journal, Philosophy of Science. He also plans to coedit a special 2014 issue of the Journal of Consciousness Studies on Embodied and Extended Theories of Conscious Experience. In addition, Silberstein plans to write an introduction and contribute an article to the issue.
Silberstein is scheduled as one of four keynote speakers at the 2014 meeting of the Society for Mind and Matter in Tucson, Ariz., in April 2014.
Also in April, he plans to give a presentation at the 20th anniversary Science of Consciousness Conference at the University of Arizona in Tucson. The talk – one of 60 accepted from 500 submissions– is titled “Experience Unbound.”
Silberstein is scheduled to give another presentation at the University of Copenhagen’s Center for Subjectivity Research (CFS), March 6, 2014. The talk is titled “Extending Experience with Extended Cognition.” Since 2002 the CFS has carried out research on the self and its relation to others and the world from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Peter DePuydt, High Library, published the article, “The Mortgaging of Souls: Sugar, Slaves and Speculation,” in the Fall 2013 issue of Louisiana History.
Collaborations & Group or Department News
The Elizabethtown College Mock Trial Team competed in the State College (Pa.) Regional Mock Trial Tournament and received two awards. Samantha Finnegan ’17, received an award for best witness, and the team earned the Spirit of AMTA Award for the second time. This award is given to the mock trial team that best embodies the principles, ethics and values of the American Mock Trial Association.
Science education students presented at conference. Lauren Eltringham, chemistry education, and Rachel Fuehrer, Abigail Steele and Emily Young, biology education, presented their work on “Core Standards and Science” at the Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association Conference in State College, Pa.
