Presidential Community Enrichment Series - Human Trafficking in the United StatesRoughly 12.3 million people across the world are victims of human trafficking, according to a 2010 report from the Department of State. But, of those millions, less than 1 percent have been identified.  Though it is often thought that human trafficking is not a Western problem, the Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimates that 100,000 children in the United States are trafficked for sexual purposes each year.

This semester, Elizabethtown College’s Presidential Community Enrichment Series seminar tackles this weighty topic. Dr. Susi Mapp, associate professor and department chair of social work, and Louis Morlier, special agent with the Department of Homeland Security, discuss the topic at noon Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the Swatara Room of Myer Hall at Elizabethtown College.

Mapp conducted research among social service providers and law enforcement officers in Pennsylvania on their knowledge of human trafficking and has published books on international social work and global issues of children’s welfare. She currently is writing a book on domestic, minor sex trafficking.

Morlier is a master’s level social worker who specializes in assisting survivors of trafficking. His experience has led him to speak on the subject around the country.

The Presidential Community Enrichment Series is dedicated people to in the greater Elizabethtown area who wish to enrich their lives through learning and fellowship in a collegial environment. Those interested in attending events can register by emailing iaenrichseries@etown.edu. Registration is $10 and includes lunch, the lecture and discussion.
